The Hottest New Cocktails!
We spend a lot of time keeping up with clothing trends, but how about new cocktail trends? Even if you are not a big consumer of cocktails, there is something pretty nice about knowing what is new and hot! Even if we are wives and mothers, we can still “attempt” to order a cool drink when we’re out to dinner!
New Trends From the Cocktail World
(from “Food and Wine” magazine, March 2007)
- Bitters - These are a slightly alcoholic liquid, flavored with various extracts, used as a mixer with certain cocktails. For years, only one sort of bitters were readily available, but that is changing and new lines include orange, lemon, peach, mint and aromatic bitters. These are the newest mixers for the newest drinks.
- Rye - This liquor is made predominately from rye, a grass similar to wheat. Rye can be used as a replacement for bourbon in many drinks. There’s also a sentimental side to rye – it promotes classic rye-based New Orleans’ cocktails, like the Sazerac.
- Vermouth - Bartenders used to rinse out martini glasses with inexpensive vermouth and then mix the drink at hand. No longer! High quality vermouth is more available and worthy of remaining in the glass. Some recommended brands are Carpano, Noilly Prat and Boissiere.
