Top Ten Spa Trends for 2009!

The idea of improving upon a spa experience seems doubtful, but after reviewing the latest spa trends detailed by Spa Finder, plan to be surprised!  Here are the top ten movements in the luxurious spa world

  1. Energy Medicine – this phrase refers to a spa’s emphasis on clearing the imbalances in a body’s energy field to promote healing of mind, body and spirit.  Key offerings will include:  Polarity, Acutonics, and Jin Shin Jyutsu.
  2. Casinos – no longer devoted purely to gambling, the newest casinos will include gigantic, luxurious spas.
  3. Medical and Spa Tourism -  look for the lines between spas, medical spas and hospitals to be increasingly blended, both within the US and abroad.
  4. Eco-Embedded -  spa goers want to be “green,” but with subtle and meaningful gestures.  Look for time delay sensors for light and air conditioning, organic everything from food to spa products and spas built from sustainable materials.
  5. In Transit Spas – this phrase refers to the spas that are popping up in planes, trains and in airports serving the “uniquely captive, overstressed traveler.”
  6. Brain Health and Mental Gyms – mental fitness and brain workouts are joining traditional spa treatments like facials or massages!  The Westin Resorts, for example, have unveiled a program that disperses puzzles and brain teasers throughout your hotel experience!
  7. Learning Labs for Stress Reduction -  knowing that consumers head to spas for relaxation and stress relief, and that an hour long treatment may not do the job, spa staff will teach guests how to sustain relaxation at home!  Techniques could include breathing exercises, hot baths and meditation.
  8. Mindful Spending – spa deals and “value added” pricing will be more common as well as growth in the popularity of “daycations” and “spacations.”
  9. Gen X & Y – the Baby Boomers led the spa craze, but are quickly being followed by the next generations!  Spas will be striving to accommodate the needs of the Gen X & Y, who tend to visit spas in groups, need access to technology and admire eco efforts!
  10. Branding -  given the ever increasing number of spas (almost 72,000 world wide), it’s crucial that spas establish and broadcast a strong brand identity that is unique and special.

While some of these trends may seem a bit farfetched, at least you’ll know what you’re getting into if you come across them on your next spa visit!  Enjoy!
