Tip of the Week – Tailgating

Tailgate!

Sunday, September 23rd, marks the first official day of the Fall season and the weather in my part of the world is definitely cooperating!  The crisp air and blue sky bring to mind one of Fall’s best traditions, tailgating!  And so my thought for the week is to pick up tickets for a football game and plan a fun tailgate picnic!

Don’t worry if you don’t have National Football League or top ten college team tickets!  Get out and cheer for your local high school or college team with ticket prices that are more affordable anyway!  A lot of families in my town attend Princeton University’s home games for only $7 a ticket and enjoy a festive, pre-game, outdoor meal!

Bring Along a Meal

Your tailgate meal can be as simple or elaborate as you wish!  Consider sandwiches made on long baguettes that you can slice down once you’ve set up camp!  For filling try:

  • Sliced turkey breast, spread with Boursin cheese and garnished with red leaf lettuce.
  • Sliced tomatoes, fresh mozzarella and basil, drizzled with olive oil and salt and pepper.

Other easy crowd pleasers are buckets of Kentucky Fried Chicken or store bought hoagies!  If you feel up to the challenge of keeping food hot at your tailgate, consider serving Kahlua Pork, Barbeque Chili or Teriyaki Drumettes!  For more inspiration, take a look at the October, 2007 issue of Everyday with Rachael Ray magazine!  This recipe packed issue features an entire tailgating menu!

Round out your meal with chips and dip, drinks (hot or cold depending on the weather!), and cookies or brownies.

Don’t forget

Don’t forget condiments, paper goods in the school colors, silverware, blankets/cushions, bottle opener, corkscrew, Purel and sunscreen, folding chairs and table, music, a football to toss around before the game, trash bags and paper towels for quick clean up!  If you have time, colorful balloons or flowers will add some extra style to your tailgate scene!

Organize a Tailgate Party!

With a tailgate, the more the better!  Invite families and friends to join you or better yet, use a football game as an opportunity to entertain guests!  Send out cute invitations and host a fun, easy get together that will please kids and adults alike!  Score a touchdown by organizing a tailgate party today!
