Last Minute Mardi Gras Celebration - Make a Muffaletta!
Maybe you don’t have the time or inclination to host an elaborate Mardi Gras gala, but you can still give a nod to this fun occasion with another New Orleans favorite! The muffaletta sandwich was invented in 1906 at an Italian market on Decatur Street called the Central Grocery and still remains the quintessential New Orleans sandwich!
The muffaletta is made on a large, round Italian loaf of bread and filled with an assortment of meats, cheeses, and olive salad! An absolutely delicious combination! In researching recipes for muffaletta sandwiches, I found a terrific version by Bobby Flay for the Food Network that calls for 2 ounces each of Genoa salami, hot sopressata, dry salami, Serrano ham and thinly sliced Manchego cheese. (I’m sure that your favorite Italian meats and cheese would work just as well!) A simple plan to make the olive salad is also included. If you want to save some time, consider purchasing the olive salad from Cajun Grocer! (cajungrocer.com, $6.25)
Give this sandwich a try on February 5th and start a new tradition in your home!
