Typically, while preparing for our family’s Easter celebration, I am inspired to embrace the spring season. But this year’s untimely Easter date didn’t do a thing to help me usher in the springtime. Making up for lost time, here’s my list of ten easy ways to welcome this most welcome time of year!
- Cut fresh flowers! - Cut fresh flowers from your yard or pick some up at the grocery store! Forsythia, daffodils, or tulips arranged in a simple vase and prominently displayed on your kitchen table will lift everyone’s spirits.
- Open your windows! Letting fresh air into your home is one of the best parts of spring time weather. When we moved into our 60 plus year old home, the screens that fit the windows were in terrible shape, so we found a quick fix that I ended up loving – adjustable window ventilators. I picked these up at our town hardware store and they’re perfect for an impromptu decision to enjoy some spring breezes!
- Create An Inviting Entrance - Wipe down your front door and the surrounding molding. Sweep the steps and replant flower pots or urns, adding color and curb appeal! This year I planted pansies and ranunculus and the combination really worked well! (See, Creating Curb Appeal)
- Switch Out Your Winter Coats and Accessories - Sort out your family’s collection of winter coats and accessories. Wash, dry clean and donate as needed! Make room for flip flops, beach towels and spring sports equipment.
- Freshen Up Your Wardrobe - Buy yourself something fun and colorful to wear or a fabulous bag to carry – this spring my favorite purchase was a bright orange cardigan sweater from J.Crew, trimmed with organza flowers! A vibrant green pocketbook might have worked just as well!
- Plan for Celebrations - Think ahead about the celebrations that arrive each year with the spring time: weddings, graduations, First Communions, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day! The sooner that you give these occasions some thought, the more thoughtful your gifts will be! (See Special Gifts for Milestone Occasions)
- Treat Yourself to a Pedicure! - Sandal season is truly just around the corner – you need to be prepared (See Improve the Safety of Your Pedicure)
- Lighten Up Your Decor - Consider swapping out heavy drapes or window treatments for light valances or sheers. You’ll have a chance to dry clean or launder the cozy, winter versions and enjoy the bright sunshine that simpler curtains let in. Similarly, trade your duvet and quilt for a cotton or matelasse coverlet.
Selectively Spring Clean! - Choose only one or two “spring cleaning” tasks and refuse to be overwhelmed by the thought of cleaning your entire house top to bottom! What about just tackling the inside of your hutch? Or your kitchen’s junk drawer? The linen closet or coat closet? Make your decision based on greatest need and don’t look back! And while you’re at it, try sporting some fabulous rubber gloves from Room Service Home! These colorful, gingham and ribbon trimmed gloves are so cute that you might almost want to clean something! (roomservicehome.com., item #GA143201, $17) - Plan a Family Picnic! - Celebrate the warm weather with a family picnic! Whether you eat in your yard, at a park, or on your apartment’s balcony, nothing tastes better than food that’s enjoyed outdoors!
