Tip of the Week – My Second Favorite Kitchen Gadget!
It seems like ages ago that I wrote about my very favorite kitchen gadget – a pair of CUTCO kitchen scissors that I employ in a ridiculously diverse number of ways! (My Favorite Kitchen Gadget) But, that being said, I do have a second favorite, and it’s also by CUTCO - the Spatula Spreader.
CUTCO’s Spatula Spreader
This seemingly simple spreader has a wide, flexible blade for spreading and one serrated side that allows for slicing and cutting. What this means, practically speaking, is that after spreading peanut butter and jelly with the flat surface, you can then cut the sandwich with the serrated edge without dirtying a second kitchen tool. Give this utensil a try with buttered toast, ham and cheese, and of course, that classic PB & J! (CUTCO Spatula Spreader)

I have both the Cutco scissors and the spreader. I love the scissors. I use the spreader for sandwiches but also to frost cakes. Do you put these utensils in the dishwasher? I do but I don’t know if it’s a good idea.
Carolyn – Thanks for the great comment! And yes, I also put my Cutco utensils in the dishwasher with no problems at all!
I have some Cutco knives that I got as wedding presents (almost 9 years ago!) that I’ve always washed in the dishwasher. They’ve held up just as well as my fancy German knives that I’ve always washed by hand.
While I don’t have the Cutco variety – my kitchen scissors are my favorite hands down too – I use them like you said, raw chicken and other meats, fresh stuff, but my favorite uses are to cut up steak, chicken and even spaghetti for my toddler. It is so much easier to cut a steak with a pair of scissors than to waste my time with a regular steak knife – my hubby and I find we’ve started using them for our steaks too before taking our plates to the table.
Cutco products are DEFINITELY dishwasher safe. It is however recommended that if you do wash them in your dishwasher that you use a non-abrasive detergent, as the handles may lose some of their luster after prolonged exposure. That being said, the guarantee covers polishing and refurbishment of the handles, so no real worries.
