May Day Dilemma

whitetunicMay Day Dilemma

It’s the age-old question, “Can I wear white after Labor Day?”  But the more important question is, “Can I wear white BEFORE Memorial Day?” And the answer to both fundamental questions is: it depends on the white.  I am actually for white year around as long as you wear the right white at the right time.

When Can You Wear White?

  • Winter whites are scrumptious and cozy and should be worn November through February.
  • Summer whites are appropriate and en-vogue June through August.
  • The other months should be used with caution and common sense.  If you don’t know what I am talking about steer clear.

For instance, white patent sandals before May 31st should be left to those holding an Easter basket and collecting eggs.  White jeans can be worn for all 12 months, assuming you have the assets to pull off white jeans over 12 months (word to the wise: I do not. Nor do I know more than two perfectly toned peeps that do).

White tunics, flow-y white dresses, and white bags can and should be worn and toted when it’s ridiculously-hot and you’re feeling a tad tropical (accessory = drink with an umbrella in it).  Just make sure your white skin doesn’t out white your look.  And never, ever carry the white bag unless you’re wearing 65% white (think dark stockings with white flats, e-gad!).

Parameters For Wearing White

  1. Fit – Make sure the fit is fantastic.  No panty lines, no discoloring, never tight, never see through.
  2. Quality - Make sure the white looks expensive.  Or, let me rephrase, make sure the white doesn’t look cheap.  More than any other color, white can often look tacky.  Make sure it’s not too sheer, seams don’t pull, no frayed edges, and repeat no discoloring/yellowing (linen is the biggest culprit).
  3. Condition – Commit to one season. Your white purchase usually will last you a good Summer Season (maybe two Winters if you take special care). It stains easily and we’ve already discussed discoloring, so be in it for the short haul.
