Host an Olympic Games Viewing Party!

olympicrings.jpgTip of the Week – Host an Olympic Games Viewing Party!

The Games of the XXIX Olympiad will begin at 8:08:08 p.m. on Friday, August 8th, 2008, or in other words, 08-08-08, with the broadcasting of the opening ceremonies live from Beijing, China on the NBC network.  And of course, this major event deserves a party!

What to Watch

If you can swing it, host a viewing party of the Opening Ceremonies on August 8th, but if you need a bit more time, choose your party date around your favorite summer sport.  At nbcolympics.com, you can search for programming by date, time and specific event.

The clever people at party411.com have created an invitation just for this occasion!  Flat panel cards featuring the Great Wall of China are customized with your invitation details for $1.85 each.  Another fun idea is to print or write party details on a plain card and attach a “gold” medal to each. What to Serve

Given the Beijing location, ordering in Chinese food is both easy and thematic!  Another option is to put together an “international” buffet with selections like pasta (Italy), eggrolls (China), hamburgers (USA) and so on.  If you choose a potluck approach, assign each guest a different country!

If you decide to serve Chinese food, pick up the “Chinese Take Out” paper plates and napkins from platesandnapkins.com  ($5 – $6) and a set of red, light up lanterns from cherryblossomgardens.com, $12.75 for a set of 4.

For more Olympic flair, Plum Party has some great choices including paper goods in gold, silver and bronze, plastic cups reading 08-08-08, and a set of 15 Olympic rings.  (plumparty.com, $18/three sets of five, pictured at top of page)

Whether you decide to host an Olympic Viewing Party or not, watching the games is a great way to spend time with your family and to support our athletes!  Three cheers for the USA!
