Busy Bee’s Beach Books!
Reading on the beach probably ranks as one of my very favorite things to do in the world! The sun, ocean breeze and the sound of the kids playing and waves crashing are the perfect back drop for fun, page-turning reading! And so, when I get a chance to have dad or grandparents watch the kids in the water, I can’t wait to grab my book! But this book needs to be truly of the “beach book” genre – fast paced, not requiring great attention to the plot and maybe a little spicy! Here are some of the books that I’ve read on the beach or have come across my path recently!
Suspense/Mystery
Angels and Demons by Dan Brown - Set in Rome and the Vatican, this book moves quickly and is consistently entertaining! Many readers preferred this book to The DaVinci Code.
Beach Road by James Patterson – in Patterson style, this book has short chapters, fast plot, offers a bit of violence and is a bit risqué! Perfect for the beach!
The Broker by John Grisham - leaving the US, Grisham takes readers this time to Italy with his latest legal thriller!
Labyrinth by Kate Moss - this is a fascinating novel about two women 800 years apart – one during the crusades in the 1200’s and the other on a modern day archeological dig – who both follow a captivating mystery.
Romance
Open Season by Linda Howard - this book is actually a combination of romance and crime solving! Fans of this author rank this book as her best to date and note the sassy heroine, wise guy alpha hero, a sizzling relationship and a thread of suspense tying it all together.
Body Surfing by Anita Shreve - I’ve never read a book of Ms. Shreve’s that I have not thoroughly enjoyed! This novel spans three summers in the life of one woman and the beach house setting almost becomes a character itself.
Quirky
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time by Mark Haddon - extremely well reviewed, this novel is told from the vantage point of an autistic teenager who is determined to find out who killed the neighbor’s dog. Thoughtful, entertaining and laugh out loud all describe this book!
Water for Elephants, A Novel by Sara Gruen - this book is one that truly lives up to its fabulous reviews! The story is told by Jacob, alternating between his current day nursing home and his job in the circus during the Depression. Moving, spell binding, truly rapturous and leaves you wanting more are just some the adjectives used to describe this read.
Chic Lit
Queen of Babble by Meg Cabot – this is an adult novel by the author of The Princess Diaries series for teens billed as a lighthearted story about a woman who moves to London to live with a boy she knew for one day at college! When things don’t turn out as she hoped, she heads across Europe in search of friends and romance. If you enjoy this book, there is a recently released sequel, The Queen of Babble: In the Big City.
You know that your perfectly packed beach bag is just begging for one of these great books! If you haven’t been intrigued by the books mentioned above, take a look at recommended reading and new authors under get reading! I’m determined to get you to do some fabulous reading this summer!!
