Beauty Flashback! Revisit the 1970’s with Me!

Perhaps it’s because my daughter is thirteen or because I was in a reminiscing mood, but I recently found myself recalling something that was a big thrill in my early teenage years  -Gee Your Hair Smells Terrific!  This distinctive shampoo was the one everyone used and we probably overwhelmed the general public with the unique scent!

I figured that the shampoo was a thing of the past until I was paging through this month’s In Style Magazine (InStyle Makeover, Fall 2007, page 184) and had to laugh – there was my old favorite gracing the pages of a hip magazine!

From thinking about Gee Your Hair Smells Terrific to discovering that you could still buy it, I traveled back in time to a few of the other products that rocked my teenage world!  What about Love’s Baby Soft Perfume (I also loved the lemon version),  Bonne Bell Lip Smackers, Sweet Earth solid perfume and Tickle deodorant?

Could you still buy these 1970’s favorites?  Well, the answer is yes!  A quick “Google” search turned up sources for each that I’ve mentioned, with the exception of Tickle, which no longer seems to be in production!  At the risk of totally dating myself, I thought that I’d share this trip down memory lane with Busy Bee readers!

What would you add to my list of beauty products?  I’d love to know what reminds you of your teenage years!  Write back and reminisce with me!

I like all those shampoos mentioned, but my favorite was Breck-loved the clean smell of it! Also they seem to have changed Johnson’s Baby Shampoo, lotion, and Baby Magic Lotion, remember those? They are not as good, although Johnson’s baby powder seems the same.

  2. Judy Akin says:

Did anyone love Breck shampoo like I did in the 70′s? How about Johnson’s baby shampoo, lotion, and powder? Also Baby Magic lotion? Those items are still on the market but not as good. Breck just dissappeared, they changed it and it didn’t smell the same.

Hi! Does anyone remember the name of the lotion from the early to mid 70′s–something like “Touch of Sweden”.

  4. shelley finkelstein says:

Love, love, love it! I am looking for a few things but don’t know the names. One is a strawberry cologne, that was in a bottle shaped like a strawberry, cute lil round bottle with a spray top. I loved that scent! Then, another is by Jovan, is called Pink Musk.
There is also Tickle deodorant, and a shampoo that had beads in it- the scent was amazing!
We knew how to do it all right back then- music, products, living life:-)
    Rock On!
Come and check out my blog and laugh about getting older with me.

I loved Tickle deodorant. I actually got complements from guys when I wore it. But I love the smell of old spice deodorant on men. Weird huh? So of course I would slather it on, half way down my rib cage so I would never sweat ever again. I loved that stuff and the huge ball on the end of it.
I would also get comments on wearing Chantilly perfume, but I saved everyone’s noses, bc I only wore a tiny bit of that. I got more complements from wearing the drug store perfume than I ever had wearing expensive perfume.

  8. Diane says:

Oh, my gosh, the 70′s were the best!! I absolutely loved Lemon Up Shampoo & Conditioner – it made my blonde hair sparkle. I would get so many compliments when wearing Oleg Cassini for Women Cologne. I currently wear Elizabeth Taylor’s Passion but would go back to Oleg Cassini if I could find it. Any ideas?

Does anyone remember the CLEAR lip gloss that came in a small round WHITE PLASTIC compact (about as large as a half dollar) with a hinge on back and a mirror in the mid 1970s? It was gooey, and you had to apply it with your finger (no brush). It appeared ORANGE in the compact, but went on clear. You could not see through the top of the compact.

My friends are trying so hard to remember it! We all used it in 1973 and 1974. I think it came from the drugstore. Please reply if you remember it!! Thank you.

Hi, just wondering if anyone can help me. In the 1970s I had a couple of solid perfumes – I think they were called “yum yum pots” or something like that? They were really tiny, and the scents were very ‘loud’ and fun. The pots were plastic, I think they were bright green, and one may have been bright orange. Does anyone remember these?

  30. Susan says:

I have loved reading all your comments ladies. 70′s products were great. I remember all you’ve discussed.
