April Fool’s Day!
Just when you think that the dreary days of winter will never end, along comes a crazy holiday that can really give you a laugh! And hopefully at someone else’s expense! In the past few years, my husband, who is generally very serious, has really teased me with some well planned April Fool’s jokes. And seriously, nothing is funnier than pulling some pranks on your own children - they bug you enough every other day that April 1st is an open door for motherly fun!
When did all of this nonsense begin? Well, prior to the enactment of our current calendar, the celebration of the new year began on March 25th and lasted for eight days, ending on April 1st. The Gregorian Calendar, introduced in the late 1500’s, declared January 1st to be the first day of the new year. Given the poor avenues of communication, it took years for the January 1st date to reach everyone. Many kept celebrating the new year on April 1st, despite the change in the calendar, giving rise to the April Fool!
