Display Your Patriotism with Creativity and Pride!
Memorial Day has come and gone, happily launching us into the summer season! If your family is like mine, you marked the occasion well with pool openings, barbeques and parades! But – did you also mark the occasion with a nod to the heritage of the holiday? The very first Memorial Day was celebrated in 1868 to honor those who had died in our Nation’s service and this is often forgotten as we spruce up our yards and fire up the grills.
One of the easiest things that we can do, regardless of our political opinions or affiliations, is to display the American flag on special occasions including Memorial Day, Flag Day and the Fourth of July. During the long months following 9/11, our flag flew every day. Now that that same flag is somewhat worse for the wear, I recently picked up some small flags at my local dollar store to embellish the planters on my front steps.
Don’t let July 4th arrive without choosing a flag for your family’s home! You don’t need to have a traditional flag pole or flag post in order to celebrate patriotism! There are a number of creative ways to demonstrate your support! Take a look at:
- Lillianvernon.com - here you can choose from many decorative buntings, wreaths, garlands, door mats, and more, all with a patriotic flair.
- Brookstone.com - offers more traditional choices with flags, buntings and poles in different sizes.
Whatever you choose to do, be assured that you will be making a small, but important, gesture of faith and confidence in our country!
